November 2018 - Notting Hill Genesis – Work Experience Week 2018

Our annual Work Experience programme kicked off on Monday 22nd October with 26 students coming into the organisation. The week started with an induction event held at Atelier House in Camden, where students were introduced to Notting Hill Genesis and took part in ice breaker activities before meeting their supervisors for the week.

The students spent the work experience week sitting in various departments across the business including IT, Regeneration, Facilities, Policy, Neighbourhoods & Marketing. This was the first year we held the programme across our newly merged organisation, so it was great to have so many departments involved from the legacy organisation. Students were given a true feel of Notting Hill Genesis and the work we do as an organisation.

Some students were even lucky enough to go out on trips throughout the week. For example, Students under supervision of Miles Lanham (Acting Head of Region – Westminster, West & South London) had the opportunity to visit the Houses of Parliament to meet Karen Buck MP regarding Welfare Benefits & universal Credit.

On Friday, we teamed up again with the Life Skills team at Barclays to deliver some interview & CV Skills workshops. An addition this year was a session led by some of the apprentices who work at Barclays – they gave students an insight into their roles and how an apprenticeship has helped them kickstart their career. As always, this was a very successful morning and a great way to round up the weeks work experience! Wasim Milad (Facilities Officer) had this to say about his student, Zakiya – “Zakiya showed a real willingness to do. She impressed with how quick she picked certain things up. She showed a good attitude throughout the 4 days with us. Overall I have been really pleased with her. Nothing but good remarks to make on a wonderful young woman.”

Kylah, a student from Capital City Academy working in the Social & Economic Regeneration Team, said “This work experience has been an eye opener. It has given us an insight to the real world of work and has given us a wide range of experience / skills. We thought it was a great experience and it was good to work in an office and see an office environment”.

As always, our work experience programme was a huge success! We had great feedback from both students and supervisors – Looking forward to our next one!
